“Put variety in white” for “black is not colour” is an exhibition of photographs taken around the world over the years by photographer Sally Rice. By primarily showcasing colour photographs, Sally seeks to redress the balance of the recent resurgence in the popularity of black and white photography. In reference to the fact that she advocates colour photography, Sally uses the quote ‘Put variety in white’ from Charles Webster Hawthorne and ‘Black is not colour’ from Édouard Manet (both nineteenth century painters). Sally does, however, also produce and showcase black and white photographs.
A keen traveller, Sally’s photographs are a diary of her journeys throughout Australasia, North America, Europe and Asia. Her photographs demonstrate that the usage of, and enjoyment of colour is universal; from the sky scraping architecture in Canada and the natural beauty of Australia to the lively festivals of India. To quote Sally; “Colour speaks all languages”.
