British Virgin Island’s Sustainable Fisheries Project links up with University of Plymouth’s Marine Institute for PhD Placement

Caribbean Sustainable Fisheries (CSF) based on Tortola has linked up with the UK’s University of Plymouth Marine Institute to provide a hands-on placement for PhD student Alex Wills

Caribbean Sustainable Fisheries (CSF), based on Tortola, has linked up with the UK’s University of Plymouth Marine Institute to provide a hands-on placement for PhD student Alex Wills. Alex was appointed by Giles Cadman, Chairman of the Venulum Group (a BVI headquartered multi-national private wealth management firm, www.venulum.com).

Venulum is a major shareholder in CSF, which aims to sustainably farm Caribbean Spiny Lobsters – the underlying principle being biological neutrality – to create a scalable, sustainable lobster-farming model that can be reproduced throughout the world, whilst also making a solid contribution to the local economy. This project is currently entering its commercial phase, and hopes to produce its first commercially-sized lobsters in 2009.

Alex will be undertaking research for a PhD. His thesis topic will consider the sustainable harvest of lobster pueruli and the impact of harvest on a local fishery. He will be based in Tortola for 2-3 years, depending on the effectiveness of the collecting equipment, and how far his research progresses.

Venulum Chairman Giles Cadman is pleased to have increased the research capability with the addition of Alex to the Caribbean Sustainable Fisheries team. “Proving sustainability is a crucial part of this business, and Alex’s research will help prove this, while at the same time provide a capable young man with the opportunity to pursue a practical research degree. It is pleasing that we have been able to create a win-win situation,” says Mr Cadman.

Alex has settled well into the team at Caribbean Sustainable Fisheries, and has already increased the team’s collector production capability. Giles Cadman hopes that Caribbean Sustainable Fisheries will be able to offer similar opportunities to other PhD students in the future, building on the strengths and experience gained via this marine sciences partnership with Alex and Plymouth.
