International Vulture Awareness Day

International Vulture Awareness day will be taking place on the 5th September 2009. It is hoped that the worlds zoos and bird gardens will use that day to promote the importance of vultures within the the web of life.

Over the past several years the vultures in Asia have been under threat of extinction. Chemicals used in the medication of cattle have moved up the chain and have been consumed by the scavenging vultures, natures natural cleaner uppers. Sadly they were intolerant to the drugs and died.
Introduced legislation means that they are now making a slow comeback. Threats still remain.
