Airport closure in Iceland forces Icelandair to re-route scheduled flights through Glasgow

Icelandair flights that were scheduled to take place today and tomorrow will now be flying out of Glasgow International Airport in Scotland. The upheaval of the Icelandair flight plan is in response to the closure of Keflavik International Airport in Iceland which closed yesterday morning due to ash fall in the surrounding area from the volcano at Eyjafjallajokull. The airport is expected to be closed for another 24 hours.

Despite the closure of the Iceland’s international airport, Icelandair will be flying its transatlantic and European flights from Glasgow. Flights to New York, Boston, Copenhagen, Oslo, Amsterdam and London began yesterday morning and will continue throughout today. As well as this, there will also be two flights a day from Glasgow to Akureyri in the north of Iceland.

The airline company has been working hard to provide an alternative flight plan as it finds itself in a similar situation that many other airlines throughout Europe have experienced over the past week. However, Icelandair encourages passengers to monitor news and information about flight schedules as changes could still occur with little notice due to the unpredictability of the situation.

Icelandair’s preparations have been focused on keeping operations going, keeping a flight path between Iceland and the rest of the world open and also providing great customer service. Crew, technicians, managers and client services have already been moved to Glasgow and will be employed there for as long as is required.

Icelandair’s services will be open all weekend ready to help passengers with any additional enquires and up-to-date information about flight plans can be found at www.icelandair.co.uk
