Oil and Gas activity in the North of Norway

As western Europe’s largest oil and gas producer, Norway is now exploring the idea that up to 40% of its untapped resources could be in the Barents Sea. These resources are estimated to be worth up to 230 billion Euros.

With this, Kirkenes – a small Norwegian town in the high Arctic – could become the hub for a new era of oil and gas exploration in Norway.

Cecilie Hansen, the Mayor of Kirkenes, believes that “it’s time to look to the north,” and start oil and gas activities in this part of the country. Serious investments were already made in the two major shipping terminals and the construction of a oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.

Entrepreneur Jacob Stolt-Nielsen invested 250 million Euros in the LNG project believing that “The oil and gas [that’s] going to be produced is going to increase tremendously.” When the terminal is ready, it is expected that volumes will top 18 – 20 million tons by 2018.
