With this, Kirkenes – a small Norwegian town in the high Arctic – could become the hub for a new era of oil and gas exploration in Norway.
Cecilie Hansen, the Mayor of Kirkenes, believes that “it’s time to look to the north,” and start oil and gas activities in this part of the country. Serious investments were already made in the two major shipping terminals and the construction of a oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.
Entrepreneur Jacob Stolt-Nielsen invested 250 million Euros in the LNG project believing that “The oil and gas [that’s] going to be produced is going to increase tremendously.” When the terminal is ready, it is expected that volumes will top 18 – 20 million tons by 2018.
