Energy and utilities sector focus of new M2M communications barometer research paper by Vodafone

London, United Kingdom (UK) – Vodafone recently released a research paper, titled The state of M2M in energy and utilities, that discusses the adoption of machine-to-machine communications in the energy and utilities sector, outlining key findings from Vodafone’s main research paper The M2M adoption barometer 2013.

With applications such as smart meters and smart grids, the energy and utilities sector has been a real focus for M2M. Vodafone’s research showed that these applications are delivering measurable returns, and energy and utilities companies reported the biggest ROI from M2M of any industry surveyed.

M2M technology allows fixed or mobile objects – such as security cameras, cars and industrial machinery – to be connected. This enables objects to send and receive information to each other and to central management systems, autonomously and often in real time, opening up a whole new world of opportunities for business agility and efficiency.

The research shows that M2M has huge potential in the energy and utilities sector, and many of the respondents were clear about its ability to deliver competitive advantage through greater efficiency and speed of decision-making.

Vodafone’s main research paper, The M2M adoption barometer 2013, discusses the global adoption of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications for operational efficiency, amongst other advantages. The paper confirms the broad industry and global coverage of M2M technology and how the effects are transforming large and small scale businesses.

According to the research, 94% of businesses see some return from M2M, with 36% seeing significant return. The data shows that 78% of respondents see M2M adoption as crucial to business success and those that are in the process of implementing M2M, consider it a key priority. 50% of organisations will have adopted M2M by 2015.
