Preventing infection spread in Iceland’s healthcare settings as data specialist’s Lýsir and Sani nudge partner

Copenhagen September 15, 2020 – Iceland’s practice of widespread and early comprehensive Covid-19 testing paired with increased technological advancements has yielded promising results, but infection reduction still remains a vital priority.  

A study referenced by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), shows that a 10% increase in hand hygiene compliance is associated with a 6% reduction in infections. With Icelandic authorities taking active measures to ensure that healthcare institutions can provide “the best possible care to all”, the private, public and economic safety and health of society is vital. The solution is in better hand hygiene. 

Poor hand hygiene in the healthcare sector is a major problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 10 patients globally will acquire a Healthcare Associated Infection.  “The European Centre for Disease Control estimates that 3.8 million people acquire a healthcare-associated infection each year in acute care hospitals in EU countries and Norway and Iceland.” Poor hand hygiene typically occurs because staff forgets to wash hands when they are busy. Hospitals that do not measure hand hygiene are acting blindly because they do not know what the level of compliance is.

According to Sani Nudge’s own study, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, only 30 percent of healthcare professionals use handwashing in situations, where it is required. At the same time, results have shown that hospitals using the Sani nudge solution experience a threefold increase in staff compliance with hygiene rules.
