Reykjavik, Iceland, 28.03.2024 – In a strong show of support, recent polling by Prósents, and as reported by RUV, has positioned Baldur Þórhallsson as the leading candidate in the Icelandic presidential race, signalling a historic shift in the nation’s leadership landscape. Garnering an impressive 37% of the public’s favour, Þórhallsson leads by a significant 22 percentage points ahead of his closest competitor, demonstrating a robust desire for change among the Icelandic.

Baldur Þórhallsson, renowned for his profound contributions to political science and his unwavering commitment to inclusivity and equality, stands on the brink of making history. If elected, Þórhallsson, alongside his partner, esteemed actor Felix Bergsson, would represent a new chapter in Iceland’s political narrative and a meaningful step forward in global leadership diversity.

The recent survey, conducted from March 20th to 27th, reflects the sentiments of 1,950 respondents, underscoring a clear preference for Þórhallsson’s progressive and inclusive vision for Iceland. While 34% of the electorate remains undecided, this presents a unique opportunity for Þórhallsson’s campaign to engage with and galvanise an even broader segment of the population in the lead-up to the elections.

Baldur Þórhallsson, a renowned academic and Professor of Political Science at the University of Iceland, has recently announced his candidacy for President of Iceland. Born on January 25, 1968, in Selfoss, Baldur grew up on Ægissíða farm and completed his primary education in Hella. He holds a PhD and MA in Political Science from the University of Essex, UK.

An influential figure in political science, Baldur founded the Centre for Small State Studies at the University of Iceland and has contributed significantly to research in European integration, Icelandic politics, and the foreign policy of small states. His notable works include “The Role of Small States in the European Union” and “Iceland and European Integration: On the Edge.”

Baldur has also advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, aligning his academic career with active social campaigning. He is married to actor Felix Bergsson, and they reside in Reykjavik with their two children and grandchildren.

In his presidential campaign launched in Hafnarfjörður, Baldur emphasized his commitment to safeguarding human rights, including LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, and freedom of speech. He promises to act as a vigilant guardian of these rights, leveraging the presidential authority to call national referendums on critical issues. If elected, he will make history as the first openly gay head of state democratically elected by popular vote.
