A new study reveals that a compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower and kale could help fight osteoarthritis, the most general form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a joint disease cause by breakdown of cartilage and bone in joints. It mostly affects the feet, hands, spine and knees. The major presages of this are stiffness and pain.
Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects many adults. Age and obesity are the most common contributors to it. There is currently no cure other than pain relief which frequently does not work, or a joint replacement is recommended. It is considered as a major cause of disability. Certain changes in lifestyle and diet may help in slowing the progress of this disorder.
Sulforaphane is liberated when eating cruciferous vegetables such as:
• Cabbage
• Brussels sprouts
• Broccoli
• Cauliflower
• Kale
• Bok Choy or Chinese cabbage
Sulforaphane has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties according to the previous research. But this new study is a major way to show how these compounds influence the joint health. It blocks the enzymes that cause joint destruction.
The research team is also planning a small trial in 40 osteoarthritis patients who are due to have joint replacement surgery. Half of the patients will be eating super broccoli for two weeks before their surgery. After surgery they will compare the patients who ate the super broccoli with those who did not to check whether the compound can be detected in the replaced joints and whether it altered joint metabolism.
