Elections postponed in Nigeria amid mounting violence in northeast with online news site About Nigeria reporting on a chaotic time for Africa’s most populous country
Nigerian news site About Nigeria has reported that the upcoming elections, scheduled for 14 February, have been delayed until 28 March due to security fears.
The independent news and media channel notes that with much of the West African country’s military personnel engaged in operations against the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram in the restive northeast, the authorities cannot guarantee the safety of voters on election day in other regions of the country.
About Nigeria reports that the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC) says there is no other option than to delay the polls for six weeks because they cannot put innocent lives at risk.
The article notes that President Goodluck Jonathan of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been pushing for a postponement because he feels with entire states suffering at the hands of the insurgency, a true reflection of public opinion is not possible.
