REYKJAVÍK, ICELAND – May 6, 2026 – Global Peace Index rankings have once again named Iceland the safest country in the world, making it a top travel destination for 2026. For travellers seeking both safety and adventure, exploring Iceland by car offers the perfect combination of freedom, flexibility, and peace of mind.
Iceland secured the number one position with an impressive score of 1.095, marking its 11th consecutive year at the top. The Global Peace Index evaluates 163 countries using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, including levels of safety, security, and stability; factors that make Iceland an ideal choice for a safe and stress-free holiday.
Why a Self-Drive Holiday Is the Best Way to Explore Iceland
One of the most popular and rewarding ways to experience Iceland is by car. A self-drive itinerary allows travellers to explore the country at their own pace while enjoying the reassurance of being in one of the safest destinations in the world.
At the heart of any Iceland road trip is Route 1, also known as the Ring Road. This well-maintained route circles the island and connects travellers to many of Iceland’s most iconic attractions.
From the world-renowned Golden Circle, home to geysers and waterfalls, to the dramatic black sand beaches of Vík, every stop offers something unforgettable. Further along the south coast, visitors can discover the breathtaking Jökulsárlón, where floating icebergs and frequent seal sightings create a truly unique natural spectacle.
Safe, Scenic, and Unforgettable Driving Experiences
Driving in Iceland is not only convenient but also incredibly scenic. Roads are generally quiet and well signposted, allowing for a relaxed and enjoyable journey.
The journey itself becomes part of the experience. Along the way, travellers will encounter countless waterfalls, lava fields, glaciers, and hidden wonders that are often missed on guided tours. The ability to stop freely and explore these lesser-known locations is what makes a self-drive holiday in Iceland so special.
A Safe Destination for Travel in 2026
As global travellers increasingly prioritise safety when choosing where to visit, Iceland stands out as a destination that delivers both security and extraordinary natural beauty. Combined with the flexibility of a self-drive adventure, it offers one of the most rewarding and worry-free travel experiences for 2026.
