New winter 2012/2013 flights to Iceland from London Gatwick announced by Icelandair

Flights to Iceland from London Gatwick have been announced by Icelandair as part of its new winter 2012/2013 UK schedule.

Iceland’s leading airline increased its schedule from London to Reykjavik, Iceland with flights from Gatwick supplementing the company’s current twice-daily London Heathrow flights.

Flights from Gatwick this winter will operate twice per week, on Thursdays and Sundays, offering an ideal weekend getaway for people interested in the Northern Lights, Snowmobiling and other unique winter activities in Iceland.

In addition to this new London Gatwick service, Icelandair will continue to fly twice a day from London Heathrow.

“Heathrow is our main airport in London and will remain so. However, due to its popularity with international flights it is impossible at the moment for us to get additional flight allocations. In response to increasing demand, we decided to start a flight at Gatwick,” explains Birkir Holm Gudnason, Icelandair’s CEO.

“Gatwick will also give us the option of further growth in London and provide a link to our many partners with connecting flights to destinations throughout Europe and more remote destinations in Asia.”

Hjorvar Saeberg Hognason, General Manager at Icelandair UK comments, “We are extremely happy to announce the start up of our service from Gatwick to Keflavik Airport as our flights will provide an excellent weekend link between London and Reykjavík. The flight times offer the best possible long weekend options for both leisure and business passengers and meet the demands of our customers for winter tourism links.”

Matt Wood, Head of Airline Relations at Gatwick Airport said: “We are delighted to welcome a new airline to Gatwick today, offering passengers further choice to this ever popular tourist winter destination. We are competing with other London airports to attract major airlines such as Icelandair and are committed to helping them grow and meet rising travel demands.”

As bookings already looking promising for this winter, Icelandair has decided to increase its service in Spring 2013 by adding weekly Tuesday flights starting 14th May. Not only does it represent more frequency to Iceland but also gives passengers better opportunities for onwards connections to Icelandair’s 10 destinations in North America, such as New York, Boston and Washington.
